Give your eyes a break!

We are all guilty of abusing our eyes. In fact, I am one of the guilty ones. From the stressful work activities that led me to be always in front of the computer screen to the constant addition to gadgets, it is safe to say that my eyes has been through much already.

It doesn’t help that Summer is just around the corner:  Best known as the season of glare-related eyestrain where you experience stinging of the eyes because of too much concentrated sunlight.

While light is an essential part of daily life – helping you see, regulating your body clock, and even providing you with much-needed Vitamin D – too much of it can cause painful eye conditions, including eyelid twitches, eye pain and extreme sensitivity to bright light. In severe cases, overexposure can permanently damage your central vision. Harmful blue light from artificial sources such as electronic devices causes retinal cell degeneration, while ultra-violet radiation from the sun contributes to the development of cataracts.

“Everyone, no matter the age or gender, should protect their eyes daily from bad effects of excessive exposure to light,” shares Dr. Emelita Roleda, Essilor Philippines general manager. “The effects of overexposure to UV rays and harmful blue-violet light may only be visible during adulthood, when vision problems like Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) set in, so we highly advice the Filipino public to take preventive measures against them.”

Essilor, the world’s leading ophthalmic optics company, has come up with a solution that protects vision: Crizal® Prevencia multi-coated lenses, which selectively filters bad blue light and lets in essential good light needed for well-being.

“Essilor has undergone a rigid and thorough process in the creation of Crizal® Prevencia,” explains Dr. Roleda. “Its advanced light scan technology enables us to protect our eyes from irreversible eye conditions which threaten healthy vision.”

In addition to using Crizal® Prevencia lenses, she highly advices proper eye care. “Start by getting a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year,” she says. “Your eye doctor can determine the present condition of your eyes and help you take preventive or protective measures regarding possible vision problems.”

Another way to reduce the risk of eyestrain is taking frequent breaks from reading or monitor use, shares Dr. Roleda.

Lastly, she gives some sound sartorial advice when outdoors: “This summer, load your eyeglasses with Crizal® Prevencia lenses containing E-SPF 25. Then, pair your glasses with a nice hat or a sturdy umbrella.”

Indeed, eyesight is among the most important senses, but it receives less care than it deserves. By reducing strain, limiting exposure to harmful light, and making use of eyewear like Crizal® Prevencia lenses, you can protect your eyes all day long and ensure many more years of healthy vision.

Learn more about Crizal® Prevencia by visiting your eye doctor or leading optical shop nationwide, or by logging on to http://www.essilor.com.ph.

Banana Peel launches candy-colored flip flops for the little tots at home

I don’t have kids yet but we have one precious princess at home, my niece PennyLane who pretty much holds all of us like putty into her little hands.

Like all little girls, PennyLane loves her shoes and probably inherited her crazy auntie’s (ehem) love of boots and candy colored flip flops.

What this little munchkin couldn’t probably resist is Banana Peel’s latest Hopscotch Collection for kids. The Hopscotch collection is all about fun as kids get to choose from a variety of bright colors (Knucklebones/Mustard Yellow, Spud/Black, Simon Says/Bezique Green and Cariboo/Pink) to match their personalities and energy. Kids are always up for excitement and adventure and Hopscotch flip flops are designed to go along with them, wherever they go.
And colors are not just for fun, they also play a big role in a child’s development. Specific colors can affect a child’s mood, behavior, body movement and speech. The development of character and intelligence of children can be attributed partly to how colors are used in their environment while they are growing up.

The colors blue, pink, yellow and green especially affect a child’s cognitive skills and inspire happiness in them because the colors align with their energy and desire for a playful interaction. Each color have different reactions to children: Blue, the color of the sky, stimulates a cool and relaxing environment. Yellow reminds them of sunshine—the color of happiness. Green is for summer and nature— a color that invigorates and recharges them. Lastly, pink is said to attribute calmness and kindness, to ease agitated kids. Knowing how colors affect them can go a long way in raising positive, loving children, especially when shown alongside love and kindness from the people around them.

I don’t know about the other mommies out there, but our PennyLane has become very independent at the age of two. Lately she has been taken into choosing her own footwear of her own. She will surely love the candy-colored hues of the new Hopscotch collection.

Banana Peel’s flip flops are not only colorful, but they are also lightweight and safe for people of all ages. These flip flops are perfect to wear indoors and outdoors — be it for a day at the beach, or just out on the sidewalk for an everyday stroll.

Press Release: Eyeing on alternative treatment for pain: Barcelona Doctor Introduces the Ozone Therapy

Barcelona has been enjoying the perks of having Dr. Humberto Loscertales in their medical scene. The famous internal medicine specialist has been the authority and top practitioner of the Ozone therapy for the past 16 years in the Spanish City.

This December, Dr. Loscertales visited the Philippines to introduce one of the most recognized alternative treatment in the US and Europe. A proud alumnus of the Barcelona Autonomic University where he studied Medicine, Dr. Loscertales is highly regarded by the academe for his various doctoral courses, logging 100 teaching hours in the same university.

His academic career reached new levels when he finished his International MBA, starting in Barcelona Ramon Llull university for two years an intensive third year in Manhattan College NY. Dr. Loscertales also practiced medicine in various hospitals in Barcelona while juggling all his academic appointments. He practiced as an attending physician for the Intensive Care Department at the Hospital Clinic, for the Traumatology & General Surgery, at the Can Ruti General Hospital, and for Hematology & Internal Medicine at the Hospital De Sant Pau.

His impressive resume brings to mind the typical or conventional physician, with the scholarly appearance and an aura of wisdom and authority brought about by years of non-stop studying. Dr. Loscertales beaks his stereotype image by having a consistently vibrant personality and a supply of energy that often eludes men and women of his age. Apparently, the practice of Ozone therapy for more than a decade had its benefits, as Dr. Loscertales exudes his youthful vibe while preaching on this new alternative treatment with so much passion.

“We have an exceptional medical tool that increases our efficiency on the solution of medical problems, normally in a complementary way with other medical strategies. In some cases, it is the only medical tool/treatment that can provide a good solution to diseases like: Ankylosing spondylitis, Post-traumatic synovitis, Arthrosis and other degenerative diseases,” Dr. Loscertales said in a statement.

With the strong belief that this non-invasive treatment responds to various medical problems, an association of physicians was created with Dr. Loscertales as one of the founding members in 2006. The association was known as the Asosacion Espanola de Profesionales en Ozonterapia (AEPROMO). This organization spearheaded the establishment of proper standers and norms on the correct use of Ozone in medicine and to organize the international protocol of dosage and clinical indications of the ozone therapy giving the criteria for official recognition.
Ozone has recently been making headlines as it is highly regarded to get impressive results to alleviate chronic pain and it is also a tool for anti-aging. As early as 30 years old to as late as 60 years old, clients go in and out of the Ozone therapy clinics to have their cells regenerated by the O3 element. They head out with an energized body ready to take on more activities in their daily lives.

The treatment which lasts for only about 45 minutes per sessions, is now available at the Ozone Therapy Center, Ground Floor of the King’s Courts Building 1, along Chino Roces Avenue in Makati.

Colgate Palmolive Philippines celebrates 90 years of making every Filipino happy

Who would have thought that well-loved brand Colgate-Palmolive is now 90 years old?

The ubiquitous brand has been in every Filipino household for close to a century providing every need for oral care, personal care and home care with recognized brands like Palmolive, Tender Care, Axion and Ajax.

These came in the mail recently and my dad was so happy – because these are the same brands we grew up with and we used at home

It’s storied history is one for the books. Established in 1926 in a small office in Binondo with five employees, the initial products sold during that time where brands Pompeia cosmetics, Octagon laundry and Crystal White laundry bar. 1928 saw the office merging with Peet Brothers and the Colgate Company. Popular products such as Colgate Ribbon dental cream and Cashmere Bouquet toiletries were added, along with Palmolive Soaps, which pushes its growth in the next few years. Products were delivered to stores by Carabao or horse-drawn carts.

In 1941, the office and warehouse was looted by invading soldiers. In spite of this, loyal employees managed to manually copy all entries of the company’s ledgers, writing word-for-word all entries for over a week. This gave the company the opportunity to collect receivables from insurance after the war has ended.

In 1949, the company was incorporated as Colgate-Palmolive Philippines. The same year, Ajax was also introduced to the market.
An advertising pioneer; memorable campaigns

Colgate-Palmolive, more often than not, produced memorable TV commercials and campaigns. They were also the first to advertise in color in 1966, when local TV advertising switched from black-and-white to color.

Ask any Pinoy over the age of 30, and they will remember Alice Dixson’s “I Can Feel It” for Palmolive Naturals, which proceeded to win a Pilak Award na cemented its place as one of the best Philippine ads in the last 50 years.

In 2007, Colgate’s Super Mega Brushing campaign earned a Guinness World Record for the most number of children (41,000 to be exact!) brushing their teeth at the same time.

In the age of YouTube and Millennials, their Palmolive Naturals “Bounce” music video featuring Julia Barretto, Janella Salvador and Liza Soberano is considered one of the top 10 performing ads of 2015.
Giving back to the Communities

One of the company’s core values is caring for the communities where it’s present. The Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures program has been supporting oral health education across the country with free dental screenings and tooth-brushing drills, distribution of oral care kits and integrating oral health education materials with Kinder and Grade 1 curricula. This was made possible by the company’a partnership with the Department of Education for nearly two decades.

Other programs include Kabarangay sa Dental Health Program, in partnership with the Philippine Dental Association, which raises awareness all over the country through free dental check-ups and product sampling.

To celebrate its 90th anniversary, Colgate-Palmolive partnered when Puregold in support of Operation Smile Philippines, an NGO focused on providing free surgeries to indigent children afflicted with cleft lips/palate. They also partnered with Robinsons Supermarket in support of World Vision Philippines.

Currently, Colgate remains the Oral Care brand trusted by dentists while Palmolive remains the number one personal care brand in the Philippines.

Millennials adapts healthier lifestyle, says Herbalife’s latest survey

In recent years, the rise of millennials has become more prounounced, becoming one of the yard sticks for the change, preferences and trends of the market.

Herbalife Nutrition, a global nutrition company, has released the findings from its Asia Pacific Millennials At Work Survey, which revealed that Filipino millennials are adapting a healthy, active lifestyle, however, most believe their current workplace environment prevents them from doing so.

Millennials, or people born in between 1980 and 2000, are opting for a workplace that will encourage them to stay active, if only this will be embedded in every company culture. About 83 percent or eight (8) in 10 millennials have agreed that they would like their company workplace to adopt a healthy, active lifestyle.

With the millennial generation expected to make up 50 percent of the global workforce by 2020, ensuring the wellbeing of millennials will be important to improving workplace productivity.

“There are about 35 million millennials now in the Philippines, which is about one-third of the country’s entire population. Five years from now, millennials will be dominating the labor force. While most millennials want to lead healthy lives, they face real obstacles at work in doing so,” said Rosalio Valenzuela, Herbalife Philippines General Manager. “At Herbalife Nutrition, we provide our employees with nutrition products at work, subsidize gym memberships, hold regular wellness programs related to nutrition and well-being, and encourage participation in outdoor activities and sports competitions.”

Additionally, the survey findings revealed the following:

· Seven (7) out of 10 millennials strive to live healthy, active lives. However, the majority of millennials find it challenging to maintain an active lifestyle at work – eight (8) out of 10 millennials spend 6 to 13 hours at their work desk each day, and 64% of millennials get less than 30 minutes of physical activity – including standing, stretching and walking at work on an average work day. Additionally, 64% of millennials cited the “lack of time” as the key obstacle to engaging in physical activity at work.

To provide tips on how millennials and their employers can integrate positive nutrition and life style habits at their workplaces, Herbalife Nutrition has organized a sixth Asia Pacific Wellness Tour, which builds upon the successes of the past five tours that welcomed over 100, 000 participants. Five experts from the Herbalife Nutrition Advisory Board (NAB) are scheduled to tour 21 Asian cities from October 7 to 30, to hold a series of talks, workshops and medical symposia across the region.

“Through these efforts, we hope to equip organizations and employees with the right tools to collectively build a healthier work environment across Asia Pacific,”
said Valenzuela.

Julian Alvarez Garcia, M.D., Ph.D., a member of the Herbalife Nutrition Advisory Board, visited Manila recently to share expert advice on how millennials can adopt simple positive nutrition and lifestyle habits at work to improve their overall well-being in the long run.

Some of the tips to help foster a healthier millennial workforce include:

Nutrition

  • Dedicate a healthy eating day each week and get colleagues involved in making healthy choices for lunch on this day.
  • Boost water intake to help the body digest food, rid the body of toxins, and help deliver nutrients to the cells. Drink at least eight (8) glasses or two (2) liters of water a day.
  • Have a protein shake combined with non-fat milk and healthy fruit for breakfast. With 20-30 grams of protein and low-fat contents, it can provide the body with all the nutrition it needs to power through the day.

Active Living

  • Create a playlist that incorporates upbeat music and play with hourly intervals.
  • Use Running Apps to keep energized and on-pace during regular runs.
  • Set a goal to join running competitions to motivate self to sustain an active lifestyle.

1Herbalife’s Millennials At Work Survey was conducted in 2016, with 5,500 respondents aged 18 and above, from Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

Let’s go on a food trip at Alaska Merry Cremas Food Fest 2016

If there’s one thing that best highlights the joys and abundance of the Christmas season, it’s the many feasts and gatherings that bring Filipino families and friends together. Aside from the happy memories, the catching-up and the bonding opportunity, it’s the sumptuous dishes coming out of the kitchen and even the take-out box that is truly the centerpiece of every Christmas gathering.

The Yuletide Season also marks the opening of many food fairs and bazaars where up and coming food merchants take center stage and get the opportunity to showcase their delicious food products to foodies and the public. Bazaars provide the chance for upcoming names to reach out to a bigger slice of the market at a more convenient setting due to its strategic location, high market traffic and the word-of-mouth advertising it usually brings.

This year’s Alaska Merry Crémas Food Fest, to be held on Sunday, November 6, from 11AM to 8PM at the Trinoma Activity Center in Quezon City proves to be another exciting gathering of more than 30 food concessionaires all geared up to showcase their various food specialties to the public. While the food on display is a mix of sweet and savory dishes, there’s one thing that makes it both delicious and delectable and that is the Alaska Crema All-Purpose Cream.

On it’s fourth staging, start-ups and established businesses operating out of their home kitchens relish the opportunity of being able to showcase their specialty dishes, while also having the chance to gain more patrons, thanks to the exposure being offered by the event.

Here, three food merchants speak about their passion for good food and the “créma” that makes it possible.

Chef Jon’s: Sumptuous, mouth-watering cakes

by Chef Joseph Sanvictores

Baking has always been a passion for Joseph Sanvictores, a young chef who is living the dream of starting his own bakery, Chef Jon’s, following a quick detour with food. Already an established chef with multiple food businesses under his name, Chef Joseph started offering cakes and other pastries out of his home kitchen two months ago. As a baker, he credits Alaska Crema for giving his cakes its distinct taste, “What I like about Alaska Crema is that its a cream that’s not too overpowering in sweetness; it has that balanced taste that works well for my cakes,” he shares.

Since the bakery is still in its infancy, Chef Joseph appreciates the fact that Alaska Crema gives bakers like him value for money — especially since baking is a business that relies heavily on the use of creams. By joining this year’s Alaska Merry Crémas Food Fest, he hopes to reach out to a bigger market, with more people having the opportunity to get to know more of his products. Chef Joseph will showcase up to four variants of cake on display, including his best-seller, dubbed the Birthday Cake.

Southern Barbecue: Pinoy favorite made different

by Anna Tugas and Marsie La Sangre

Barbecues are a truly distinct Pinoy staple food, hence making them a dime-a-dozen. Southern Barbecue, a business by long-time friends Anna Tugas and Marsie La Sangre hopes to make that difference by offering their barbecues with a side of Alaska Crema. If this sounds implausible, then all the more that the public should try it.

The two long-time friends have food businesses of their own when they decided to collaborate on a shared food business. After deciding to offer barbecues (“because they’re easy to make,” says Anna), the two were able to open a physical store in their BF Homes neighborhood. Since barbecue has always been a common viand, the two decided to put an edge and a spin to the staple meal by offering it with a side of garlic sauce, made out of Alaska Crema.

Marsie believes that joining Alaska Merry Crémas Food Fest serves as a good marketing tool to their business, on top of having a physical store. The association to the Alaska Créma brand also provides them with the edge and the exposure that will definitely benefit Southern Barbecue.

Batter Up: Sweet brownies and cookies you can’t help but nibble on

by Florence Bayer

Florence Bayer discovered her love of baking when she was still barely out of high school, following a serendipitous turn at the school oven during a home economics class. Bayer began offering the baked goodies for sale, buoyed by the success of her signature brownies that turned out to be a hit even among her mom’s friends. This was more than ten years ago, and the love for baking resulted to Batter Up, Bayer’s successful home bakery business.

Bayer is back for the second time for this year’s Merry Crémas, and definitely more excited than ever to showcase more than seven variants of her baked goods. Taking center stage is her signature brownies, which counts Alaska Crema as one of its ingredients. “I started using Alaska Crema by accident. I had to improvise because I was missing a yogurt so I decided to use Alaska Crema with lemon instead. That made all the difference and had led me to create something that is well-loved by everyone,” she shares.

By joining Alaska Merry Crémas Food Fest 2016, Bayer is looking forward to having an entirely different market to cater to, plus gaining the exposure, which is very important, especially for a young baker like her.

Have a taste of what these three food merchants can offer, while also getting the chance to enjoy other sumptuous dishes and sweet delights when you visit this year’s Alaska Merry Crémas Food Fest at Trinoma. Who knows? You might just have met the next food superstar or tasted the next in-demand dish that day.
