Octopus Sisig anyone? Unique take on Pinoy favorite takes top plum in Funlasang Pinoy

Chef Danilo Puga II, who presented an original Octopus Sisig recipe as his best-tasting Pinoy dish with a twist, was recognized as the first-ever Funlasang Pinoy Twist Fest Champion. He brought home the P100,000 cash prize from UFS and exclusive publicity features.

Puga emerged victorious out of the top nine chefs who passed through the rigorous selection amongst 160 mouthwatering recipes of Filipino during the recently concluded Funlasang Pinoy Twist Fest competition by Unilever Food Solutions (UFS) Philippines.

The finalist chefs were challenged to deliver the best tasting and most innovative take on the classic Pinoy dishes with fun twists that will surely fuel the love of Pinoys for Filipino cuisine.

“We were very excited to witness our talented Pinoy chefs showcase their ingenuity in making a classic Filipino dish stand out like we’ve never seen nor tasted before,” said James Benedict Carreon, UFS Philippines Managing Director. “This competition was created to provide an avenue for our chefs and cooks to showcase their talents and creativity to reignite everyone’s love for Filipino food.”

Among the classic Pinoy dishes that the finalists needed to innovate with a twist were sinigang, kaldereta, pansit, sisig and tapa, using Knorr® products and Lady’s Choice® Real Mayonnaise. The dishes were closely scrutinized and judged by esteemed culinary experts Executive Chef Fernando Aracama of Aracama Filipino Cuisine, UFS Senior Sous Chef Brando Santos, and UFS Senior Sous Chef Paulo Sia based on the creativity of the twist, food taste and presentation, and the use of UFS products.

“Food innovation is not about changing the original recipe of a dish. It is about staying faithful to the original concept of the dish but adding creativity to improve the taste and overall experience of your diners as they eat it,” shared Chef Fernando Aracama. “We chefs need to remember this to cater to the ever-changing palate of diners who continue to seek a different kind of dining experience, and to stand out from the clutter of food choices available these days.”

“The talent and creativity of Pinoy chefs are definitely something to be proud of. As a team of chefs who understand the needs of the culinary industry, we at Unilever Food Solutions are always finding ways to provide them avenues to gain more inspiration, knowledge, and access to the right products that will complement that and help them improve the dining experience of their loyal diners,” added Carreon.

Coke Studio Ep 4: The best of OPM is on display with BP Valenzuela and Sandwich

Coke Studio is the new stage for OPM artists, where legends perform with rising stars and musical genres are blurred. There is no better example for this than the collaboration of BP Valenzuela and Sandwich – the fusion of smooth and hypnotic techno sounds with edgy rock music make for an unexpected yet exciting performance.

IMG_1829

“We’re gearheads!” exclaimed BP Valenzuela, finding common ground despite coming from two seemingly opposite ends of the music spectrum. During the collaboration, this fondness continued, proving that differences in genre never hinder mutual respect between artists.

IMG_2393

Members of Sandwich even shared their admiration for BP and her music. “She is the future. And it’s so exciting, I am so happy that we get to do this. We really like to see the young artists and from the first time we saw her, we knew,” said Myrene Academia, the band’s bassist.

Prior to the collaboration, two of the band’s members, RaymundMarasigan and Diego Castillo had written letters of recommendation for BP’s application to the music program of the College of St. Benilde.

IMG_1601

“I wrote that if I were still working with a recording label, that I would sign her up in a heartbeat,” added Diego Castillo, lead guitarist and former recording executive. In response to the band’s words, BP admitted that the recommendation letters made her cry.

The relationship between the pairing shows a side of the OPM industry where veterans uplift and support upcoming artists and by doing so, elevating the entirety of the local music scene. With this good natured relationship already established, the studio session came along easily.

According to Sandwich drummer, Mike Dizon, “We’re chill but it’s about getting it done, while still being chill.” BP continued by describing the outcome of their efforts saying, “There’s a story to it, a narrative, and it’s got more layers.” The collaboration brought about the possibility of a full album to which Raymund replied, “That’s not just a could, or a would, but a should.”

Watch these icons of the past and the present come together to bring the music of the future at Coke Studio. Catch it on August 19, Saturday at 7 p.m. on TV5 or on www.youtube.com/CokeStudioPH

PR: Happy 100th Birthday, Nikon!

One of my goals this year is to invest in a good camera. As you know, as manifested by photos on this blog, I really have to level up my game when it comes to taking photos.

Being a fan of the visual medium, it is only fair that I appreciate a really good picture. Often times, a great visual masterpiece is brought to life courtesy of Nikon, the global leader in digital imaging and optics.

Essilor_Nikon celebrates 100th birthday_logo

As it celebrates it’s hundreth birthday, Nikon has relentlessly pursued the infinite possibilities of light, harnessing the power of lenses to contribute to the advancement of imaging culture and sciences.

Since its establishment in 1917 as Nippon Kogaku K.K., Nikon has been at the very heart of innovation and development. Starting out as a manufacturer of optical glass and optical instruments.  The optical lens business started in 1946 with the sale of the Pointal lens. Nikon has since then been a leading innovator in the field of ophthalmic optics with breakthrough innovations in material, design, and coatings.  In 1983, Nikon introduces a high performance anti-glare coating with true, built-in scratch resistance. This technology becomes immediately popular in Japan, where nearly all of lenses now feature this type of coating.

This iconic brand has also contributed to the development of the optical industry, creating breakthrough technologies and high-quality, award-winning products in the process. It introduced the anti-glare coating, Hard Clear Coat (HCC), with true, built-in scratch resistance as early as 1983; the first ultra-high index lens, Index 1.74, in 2000; the first Single Vision lens, custom made according to frame shape – SeeMax – in 2002; and the first eye strain relief lens – Relaxsee – in 2005. Today, all Nikon Single Vision lenses feature its trademark Advanced Aspheric Design for sharp clear vision with limited peripheral distortion. Besides designing new digital lenses, it also continues to produce coatings that protect lenses against dust, water, abrasions and scratches, in addition to eliminating reflections and enhancing visual clarity.

In its pursuit of the endless possibilities of light, Nikon has gained extensive expertise ranging from optics and materials to image-processing and simulations such as ultra-thin ophthalmic lenses and digital cameras, to name a few. In fact, the quality of its products has earned praise among consumers around the world while setting the very standards recognized and adopted by eye care specialists themselves.

The brand “Nikon” inspires visionaries who share its belief that “some great things are not visible with the naked eyes, but perfect sight will allow you to see what it takes to achieve them.”

Experience Nikon’s 100-year journey in pursuit of the possibilities of light by visiting www.nikon.com/100th. Watch past, present and future innovations from the brand come to life through a powerful commemorative video presentation at www.nikon.com/100th/anniversarymovie.

Conzace signs multi-faceted actor Ian Veneracion as new brand ambassador

We all had our various definition of the ideal guy. Usually, the definition covers the following: tall and extremely handsome. If he happens to be talented, hardworking and dedicated family man, then he is often touted as "the complete package."

Such is the case for United Laboratories, Inc. (UNILAB)'s latest brand ambassador Ian Veneracion, the the multifaceted celebrity recently went onboard as the multivitamin brand's latest brand ambassador.

Veneracion, who currently stars as the male lead in ABS-CBN’s primetime show ‘A Love to Last,’ has been chosen to advocate for Conzace, the number one prescribed brand for multivitamin plus minerals by general practitioners and dermatologists in the country.

“It is an honor and privilege to be part of the UNILAB family for its multivitamin brand, Conzace,” proclaims Veneracion while adding, “I am grateful for this opportunity, and I strongly believe that the product can be beneficial to millions of Filipinos as it has been beneficial to me.”

For Conzace assistant product manager Mike Jimenez, Veneracion is a perfect match for the brand. “Ian is the epitome of superior immunity and good looks.”

Conzace's clinically-proven ZACE formulation, an acronym for Zinc, Vitamins A, C, and E, makes the brand the number one multivitamin and minerals product prescribed by General Practitioners and Dermatologists in the country today.

From being an adorable and talented child star known in TV programs, like the memorable1 982 sitcom ‘Joey and Son,’ Veneracion has again endeared himself to today’s generation as Engineer Antonio “Anton” Noble IV, the dashing, separated with three kids guy who falls in love with another broken soul. Who can also forget his comeback role as Eduardo Buenavista in the 2015 remake of ‘Pangako Sa Yo,’ which regained Veneracion’s fame and his career to leading man stature.

But what makes Ian truly unique and therefore, a real gem are the multiple facets of his personality: he is also a talented and acclaimed painter, an athlete, a pilot, a chef, and a dedicated family man and loving husband to his wife of many years —the last being his favorite role to play.

But to be all that, Veneracion needs a multivitamin and minerals that will help him cope, not just with his busy schedule, but with the different roles that he has to play in life. “I need strong immunity as well as healthy skin and hair, I cannot afford to get sick, and look stressed—I am glad I have Conzace to give me all that and more.”

Compared to other multivitamins, Conzace has the highest levels of ZACE combined. All these elements play different roles in one’s well-being. This unique formulation in Conzace creates a synergistic effect that is clinically proven to help boost immunity, promote healthy skin and hair, and assist in wound healing as it speeds up skin regeneration.

Veneracion, speaking from experience, explains it better: “It’s the little things that we don’t normally notice, like for example, stronger resistance against colds and flu, better and clearer skin, shinier and healthier hair. It will do amazing things; you can do more and be more for yourself, for your family, for your work without being disrupted.

“I believe that if you are healthy inside, it just comes out. It reflects physically—in your hair and in your skin. And in the line of job that I am in, it is quite important that I don't just don’t look good but really be healthy,” Veneracion concludes.

Tom Rodriguez sees things clearly, creatively with Essilor Crizal

Kapuso hunk Tom Rodriguez is more than an actor – he dabbles in music and the arts, along with his many passions on screen and off.

With his multi-faceted personality and active lifestyle, it is not surprising that he spends long hours in front of either the camera or his laptop, which heightens his exposure to health risks, especially towards his vision.

With growing awareness of these risks to his eyesight, he recently teamed up with Essilor, world leader in ophthalmic lenses, as the newest brand ambassador of Crizal® Prevencia™, a multi-coated lens featuring the brand’s most advanced protective technology.

Not many know that even before becoming one of local showbiz’s certified heartthrobs, art has has been Tom’s first love. The talented artist usually curates his many works on his Instagram account.

Many of his artworks are inspired by Philippine folklore, superheroes and characters from anime, games, and comics. He sketches and sculpts in between takes during drama filming or photo shoots. With all these taking up his non-acting time, Tom can’t help but be exposed to harmful blue lights and this has affected his vision.

“Crizal® Prevencia™ is the perfect protection I have against exposure to harmful elements and blue light everywhere I am, at any time,” shares the 29-year old actor. “It makes me enjoy doing digital animation more, knowing that I am completely protected. As a result, I can create more artwork and perform better as an artist without having to worry about eye strain or blurry vision.”

As part of his campaign with Essilor, Tom stars in the brand’s latest TVC, which shows his daily struggle with over-exposure to harmful blue light. Crizal® Prevencia™ provides front and back protection as well as selective filtering of harmful blue light from devices and the sun that can cause long-term damage such as cataracts and Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). At the same time, it lets in good light that regulates sleep and mood and boosts brain activity.

Give your eyes a break!

We are all guilty of abusing our eyes. In fact, I am one of the guilty ones. From the stressful work activities that led me to be always in front of the computer screen to the constant addition to gadgets, it is safe to say that my eyes has been through much already.

It doesn’t help that Summer is just around the corner:  Best known as the season of glare-related eyestrain where you experience stinging of the eyes because of too much concentrated sunlight.

While light is an essential part of daily life – helping you see, regulating your body clock, and even providing you with much-needed Vitamin D – too much of it can cause painful eye conditions, including eyelid twitches, eye pain and extreme sensitivity to bright light. In severe cases, overexposure can permanently damage your central vision. Harmful blue light from artificial sources such as electronic devices causes retinal cell degeneration, while ultra-violet radiation from the sun contributes to the development of cataracts.

“Everyone, no matter the age or gender, should protect their eyes daily from bad effects of excessive exposure to light,” shares Dr. Emelita Roleda, Essilor Philippines general manager. “The effects of overexposure to UV rays and harmful blue-violet light may only be visible during adulthood, when vision problems like Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) set in, so we highly advice the Filipino public to take preventive measures against them.”

Essilor, the world’s leading ophthalmic optics company, has come up with a solution that protects vision: Crizal® Prevencia multi-coated lenses, which selectively filters bad blue light and lets in essential good light needed for well-being.

“Essilor has undergone a rigid and thorough process in the creation of Crizal® Prevencia,” explains Dr. Roleda. “Its advanced light scan technology enables us to protect our eyes from irreversible eye conditions which threaten healthy vision.”

In addition to using Crizal® Prevencia lenses, she highly advices proper eye care. “Start by getting a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year,” she says. “Your eye doctor can determine the present condition of your eyes and help you take preventive or protective measures regarding possible vision problems.”

Another way to reduce the risk of eyestrain is taking frequent breaks from reading or monitor use, shares Dr. Roleda.

Lastly, she gives some sound sartorial advice when outdoors: “This summer, load your eyeglasses with Crizal® Prevencia lenses containing E-SPF 25. Then, pair your glasses with a nice hat or a sturdy umbrella.”

Indeed, eyesight is among the most important senses, but it receives less care than it deserves. By reducing strain, limiting exposure to harmful light, and making use of eyewear like Crizal® Prevencia lenses, you can protect your eyes all day long and ensure many more years of healthy vision.

Banana Peel launches candy-colored flip flops for the little tots at home

I don’t have kids yet but we have one precious princess at home, my niece PennyLane who pretty much holds all of us like putty into her little hands.

Like all little girls, PennyLane loves her shoes and probably inherited her crazy auntie’s (ehem) love of boots and candy colored flip flops.

What this little munchkin couldn’t probably resist is Banana Peel’s latest Hopscotch Collection for kids. The Hopscotch collection is all about fun as kids get to choose from a variety of bright colors (Knucklebones/Mustard Yellow, Spud/Black, Simon Says/Bezique Green and Cariboo/Pink) to match their personalities and energy. Kids are always up for excitement and adventure and Hopscotch flip flops are designed to go along with them, wherever they go.
And colors are not just for fun, they also play a big role in a child’s development. Specific colors can affect a child’s mood, behavior, body movement and speech. The development of character and intelligence of children can be attributed partly to how colors are used in their environment while they are growing up.

The colors blue, pink, yellow and green especially affect a child’s cognitive skills and inspire happiness in them because the colors align with their energy and desire for a playful interaction. Each color have different reactions to children: Blue, the color of the sky, stimulates a cool and relaxing environment. Yellow reminds them of sunshine—the color of happiness. Green is for summer and nature— a color that invigorates and recharges them. Lastly, pink is said to attribute calmness and kindness, to ease agitated kids. Knowing how colors affect them can go a long way in raising positive, loving children, especially when shown alongside love and kindness from the people around them.

I don’t know about the other mommies out there, but our PennyLane has become very independent at the age of two. Lately she has been taken into choosing her own footwear of her own. She will surely love the candy-colored hues of the new Hopscotch collection.

Banana Peel’s flip flops are not only colorful, but they are also lightweight and safe for people of all ages. These flip flops are perfect to wear indoors and outdoors — be it for a day at the beach, or just out on the sidewalk for an everyday stroll.

Press Release: Eyeing on alternative treatment for pain: Barcelona Doctor Introduces the Ozone Therapy

Barcelona has been enjoying the perks of having Dr. Humberto Loscertales in their medical scene. The famous internal medicine specialist has been the authority and top practitioner of the Ozone therapy for the past 16 years in the Spanish City.

This December, Dr. Loscertales visited the Philippines to introduce one of the most recognized alternative treatment in the US and Europe. A proud alumnus of the Barcelona Autonomic University where he studied Medicine, Dr. Loscertales is highly regarded by the academe for his various doctoral courses, logging 100 teaching hours in the same university.

His academic career reached new levels when he finished his International MBA, starting in Barcelona Ramon Llull university for two years an intensive third year in Manhattan College NY. Dr. Loscertales also practiced medicine in various hospitals in Barcelona while juggling all his academic appointments. He practiced as an attending physician for the Intensive Care Department at the Hospital Clinic, for the Traumatology & General Surgery, at the Can Ruti General Hospital, and for Hematology & Internal Medicine at the Hospital De Sant Pau.

His impressive resume brings to mind the typical or conventional physician, with the scholarly appearance and an aura of wisdom and authority brought about by years of non-stop studying. Dr. Loscertales beaks his stereotype image by having a consistently vibrant personality and a supply of energy that often eludes men and women of his age. Apparently, the practice of Ozone therapy for more than a decade had its benefits, as Dr. Loscertales exudes his youthful vibe while preaching on this new alternative treatment with so much passion.

“We have an exceptional medical tool that increases our efficiency on the solution of medical problems, normally in a complementary way with other medical strategies. In some cases, it is the only medical tool/treatment that can provide a good solution to diseases like: Ankylosing spondylitis, Post-traumatic synovitis, Arthrosis and other degenerative diseases,” Dr. Loscertales said in a statement.

With the strong belief that this non-invasive treatment responds to various medical problems, an association of physicians was created with Dr. Loscertales as one of the founding members in 2006. The association was known as the Asosacion Espanola de Profesionales en Ozonterapia (AEPROMO). This organization spearheaded the establishment of proper standers and norms on the correct use of Ozone in medicine and to organize the international protocol of dosage and clinical indications of the ozone therapy giving the criteria for official recognition.
Ozone has recently been making headlines as it is highly regarded to get impressive results to alleviate chronic pain and it is also a tool for anti-aging. As early as 30 years old to as late as 60 years old, clients go in and out of the Ozone therapy clinics to have their cells regenerated by the O3 element. They head out with an energized body ready to take on more activities in their daily lives.

The treatment which lasts for only about 45 minutes per sessions, is now available at the Ozone Therapy Center, Ground Floor of the King’s Courts Building 1, along Chino Roces Avenue in Makati.
