Tanabe Japanese Restaurant: Fallin in love again with Japanese cuisine

The high concentration of Japanese expatriates and tourists in the Philippines, especially in Manila assures that there is not a dearth in the number of Japanese restaurants in the country. They vary from the high-end to the little hall in the wall that offers the authentic fare.

Of course, there’s also Japanese-style fast food that gives california maki a bad name. Point is, if you are craving for some Japanese grub and would like to satisfy your craving for a very mean tonkatsu sandwich, there’s always somewhere to go to.

Thus, it is definite pleasant surprise to discover Tanabe which serves authentic Japanese fare during a recent company affair. I am so glad that our marketing manager chose this place as a venue.

Our pleasant dining experience began with a serving of their tofu and crunchy dilis:

How's this for starters?
How’s this for starters?

This is the silkiest tofu I’ve ever tasted — with a sweet, salty flavor and no after taste at all. The crunchy dilis has a hint of spice and you start picking on it only to realize in the end that you managed to finish the whole dish. There’s free house tea and you can also order from their beverage menu.

Our order: California Hana Bento (front) and Tepanyaki Hana Bento (PHP550 per order)

My Bento... so yummy!
My Bento… so yummy!

The California Hana Bento came with a serving of: bacon-wrapped asparagus (so good!), california maki, deep fried tofu with bonito shavings, deep fried scallops, 2 pieces prawn tempura and salad (the dressing is disappointing though). Comes with free dessert, choice of ice cream and coffee jelly.

the other order -- also delicious!

The Teppanyaki Hana Bento came with a serving of sashimi, deep fried scallops, teppanyaki beef, japanese rice shaped like a flower (cute!), deep fried tofu with bonito shavings and teppanyaki fish. Also came with a dessert.

The attention to detail and the presentation details per food is simply amazing!

We were able to reserve the place nearest the glass wall, with an unobstructed view of the beautiful Manila Bay. I can just imagine how refreshing it must be to be silently having your lunch or dinner while looking out to the shimmering waters of Manila Bay. It’s so calming and pretty.

This place definitely deserves a return visit. Can’t wait to share it with hubby and the family!
