Utada Hikaru taking a hiatus in the entertainment scene

This is one of my favorite songs–bar none:

And now, the woman behind the music has announced that she is indefinitely taking a break from the music scene to focus on her “personal life”.

Utada Hikaru, arguably one of the most well-known and highly successful Japanese pop singers, started at the music industry at the age of 15. Her debut album “First Love” remains the highest selling album ever with about 8 million copies sold. One of the few Asian artists to successfully break into the international scene, Utada Hikaru toured the United States and the United Kingdom last year. She also played the heroine Pinoko in the 2001-2002 Black Jack net anime series.

In her blog published last Monday, she explained that while she has grown so much in the last 12 years as a singer, “there is a part inside her that stopped growing”. To see a translation of her blog post, please go to this site: Hikki Texts.

Based from what she wrote, it seems (well, to me) that she has grown tired of her life as an artist. Let’s understand that Utada Hikaru started young in the business (at 15!). Since her debut album is a huge success–we can only guess that she has worked non-stop for the last 12 years. I’ve read on the blogosphere that some of her fans even commented that it seemed like she has gotten tired of releasing a full album.

She also mentioned in her blog that she is not sure how long this “hiatus” will be — 2 years or 5 years but she hopes that her fans will be forgiving and will accept her still when she comes back.
